Guide to Accessing ChatGPT, Configuration, and Cost
Part 1 — Accessing ChatGPT
Step 1: Open your web browser and go to chatgpt.com Launch any modern web browser — Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, or Firefox — and type chatgpt.com in the address bar, then press Enter. This is the official website for ChatGPT, made by OpenAI. You do not need to install anything to use it on the web. Tip: Bookmark chatgpt.com now so you can return quickly every time.
Step 2: Click “Sign up” to create a free account On the ChatGPT homepage, click the Sign up button. You can register using your email address, or sign in instantly using your existing Google, Microsoft, or Apple account. Choose whichever is easiest for you. No credit card is required to create a free account. Tip: If you already have an OpenAI account, click “Log in” instead — you can use the same account.
Step 3: Verify your email address After entering your email, OpenAI will send you a verification email. Open that email and click the confirmation link. This activates your account. If you don’t see it within a minute, check your spam or junk folder.
Step 4: Download the app on your phone (optional) ChatGPT has a free app for iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play). Search for ChatGPT and make sure it says “by OpenAI” before downloading — there are imitation apps in both stores. The app syncs all your conversations with the web version automatically and supports voice conversations so you can speak to ChatGPT hands-free.
Step 5: Download the desktop app (optional) OpenAI offers a desktop app for both Mac and Windows, available from chatgpt.com. The desktop app lets you open ChatGPT instantly with a keyboard shortcut from anywhere on your computer. It also allows screen sharing so ChatGPT can see what’s on your screen and help in real time.
Part 2 — Setting Up ChatGPT
Step 1: Explore the main chat screen Once logged in, you will see a clean screen with a text box at the bottom. This is where you type your questions or requests — called prompts. Press Enter or click the arrow button to send. On the left sidebar you will find your past conversations. Click New chat at the top of the sidebar to start fresh at any time.
Step 2: Choose your model at the top of the chat window you will see the name of the current model (such as GPT-5.3 or GPT-5.5). Click it to switch between available models. Use GPT-5.3 for quick, everyday questions — it is faster. Use GPT-5.5 for complex writing, research, or analysis tasks. Advanced modes like Deep Research and Agent Mode appear in the same menu on Plus plans and above. Tip: Using a faster model for simple tasks saves your daily quota of the more powerful model for when you really need it.
Step 3: Turn on memory Go to Settings → Personalization → Memory and toggle it on. With memory enabled, ChatGPT will remember important facts about you across conversations — your job title, preferences, writing style, and more. This means you don’t have to re-explain yourself every time you start a new chat. Note: Review what ChatGPT has stored by going to Settings → Manage memory. Delete anything you did not intend to save, especially any sensitive personal or work details.
Step 4: Configure your privacy settings Go to Settings → Data controls. Here you can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” if you do not want your conversations used to train OpenAI’s future models. This is important if you plan to discuss work, client, or personal information. Note: On the free plan, your conversations may be reviewed by OpenAI staff for safety. If privacy is critical, consider a Business or Enterprise plan where training on your data is disabled by contract.
Step 5: Upload a file or image to analyze Click the paperclip icon in the chat input box to attach a file. ChatGPT can read and analyze PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, images, and more. Try uploading a document and asking: “Summarize this in three bullet points” or “What are the key dates in this contract?” Tip: File upload limits vary by plan. Free users get limited uploads; Plus, and above get significantly more.
Step 6: Try a Custom GPT Click Explore GPTs in the left sidebar to browse the GPT Store. These are pre-built versions of ChatGPT customized for specific tasks — legal research, coding, writing, teaching, customer service, and more. Click any GPT to open it and start using it like a regular chat. On Plus plans and above, you can also create your own Custom GPT with your own instructions and uploaded documents.
