Anthropic Releases Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5: What Litigators and Small Firms Need to Know
The most capable AI model ever released to the public survived a 19-day government shutdown before reaching your desk. Here is what it means for your practice, your ethics obligations, and your bottom line.
Anthropic has released the most capable AI model it has ever made available to the public and the story of how it got here is one every lawyer should pay attention to.
On June 9, 2026, Anthropic launched two new models: Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5. Three days later, the US government pulled both off the market under emergency export controls. On July 1, after regulators lifted the restrictions, Fable 5 returned to Claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork for users worldwide.
If you use Claude in your practice or you are deciding whether to here is what matters.
Two Models, One Brain
Fable 5 and Mythos 5 share the same underlying model. The difference is who can use them and what guardrails are attached.
Claude Fable 5 is the version you will encounter. It is what Anthropic calls a “Mythos-class” model a new tier above the Opus line — released with the strongest safeguards the company has ever applied. When a request touches certain high-risk areas (primarily cybersecurity, chemistry, and biology), Fable 5 declines and the system routes the query to Claude Opus 4.8 instead. Anthropic expects these safeguards to trigger in fewer than 5% of sessions, and for legal work drafting, research, document review, deposition summaries you are unlikely to ever notice them.
Claude Mythos 5 is the same model with fewer restrictions, available only to a vetted group of cybersecurity defenders and critical-infrastructure organizations through a government-coordinated program called Project Glasswing. Unless your firm defends power grids on the side, Mythos 5 is not something you will be using. Fable 5 is the one that matters for your practice.
Why This Release Matters for Legal Work
The headline claim: Fable 5 outperforms every model Anthropic has previously released to the public, with the largest gains showing up on long, complex tasks exactly the kind of work legal practice generates.
- Longer autonomous work. Fable 5 can work on multi-step tasks for longer than any prior Claude model without losing the thread. For lawyers, that translates to more reliable performance on large document sets building a timeline from hundreds of emails, comparing contract versions across a deal folder, or summarizing a full deposition transcript in one pass.
- A 1-million-token context window by default. In plain English: the model can hold 700,000+ words in working memory at once. Entire case files, not just individual documents.
- Stronger knowledge work and vision capabilities. Improved performance on reading, analyzing, and reasoning over documents including scanned exhibits and images.
During early testing, one enterprise customer reported that Fable 5 completed a codebase migration in a single day that would have taken a team more than two months by hand. Legal work is not software engineering, but the underlying capability sustained, accurate work across enormous volumes of material — is the same skill that makes AI useful in discovery and document review.
The 19-Day Shutdown: A Compliance Story Worth Remembering
Here is the part of this story we find most instructive and the part most coverage glossed over.
On June 12, the US Department of Commerce ordered Anthropic to restrict access to both models for all foreign nationals, citing national security concerns. The order took effect immediately. Because Anthropic had no reliable way to verify user nationality in real time, it suspended access for everyone. The trigger, it later emerged, was a report from Amazon researchers describing a technique that bypassed one of Fable 5’s cybersecurity safeguards.
Anthropic’s subsequent testing found that many older, less capable models could produce the same outputs, and on June 30 the government lifted the controls. Fable 5 returned July 1, with an improved safety classifier addressing the reported bypass.
Two lessons for lawyers here:
- AI tools are infrastructure now and infrastructure can go dark. Firms that had built workflows around a single model lost access with zero notice for three weeks. If AI is part of how your firm delivers work, you need a fallback plan, just as you would for any critical vendor.
- The regulatory environment around AI is live and moving fast. Export controls, state bar guidance, court standing orders on AI use the rules governing these tools being written in real time. Competence under Rule 1.1 increasingly means staying current not just on what AI can do, but on what you are permitted to do with it.
Availability and Cost
Fable 5 is now available to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise subscribers, as well as through the Claude API (priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens for developers). An introductory period that included Fable 5 within standard weekly usage limits ran through July 7; ongoing access beyond plan limits now runs on usage credits. Access through AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry is being restored on a rolling basis.
For most solo practitioners and small firms, the practical takeaway is simple: if you have a paid Claude plan, the most capable publicly available AI model in the world is now sitting in your model picker.
Our Take: Capability Is Not Competence
Every model release like this one widens the gap between firms that use AI well and firms that do not use it at all. But raw capability has never been the hard part for lawyers the hard part is using these tools without risking your license.
Fable 5 does not change the fundamentals:
- Verify every citation. More capable models still require the verification workflow that makes fake citations impossible to file.
- Protect confidentiality. Know your settings, your terms of service, and your Rule 1.6 obligations before client data touches any model new or old.
- Document your process. As courts and bars sharpen their AI rules, being able to show how you used the tool matters as much as the output.
The tools keep getting better. The rules keep getting stricter. The firms that win will be the ones trained on both.
